A Brief Background on Winning Edge Investments

Winning Edge Investments (WEI) is one of Australia’s longest running networks of professional betting analysts, providing premium subscription based tipping services across horse racing, greyhound racing and AFL since 2013. As WEI grew to over 3,000 customers, some 14,000 subscriptions and about 20 professional experts, its technology began to lag. The company operated two legacy .NET Framework 4 websites that were not interconnected: one for subscriptions and payments, and the other for memberships, tips and back-office administration. The ecosystem maintenance was complicated by hard-coded business logic and separate payment, CRM, communication, mobile app and betting systems. We needed to modernize without affecting recurring payments, customer access, historical data, or time-sensitive tip delivery. nopStation has rebuilt the ecosystem on nopCommerce bringing together the website, subscriptions, payments, expert services, mobile apps and third-party integrations.

Challenges

Complex Legacy Migration: WEI had to migrate thousands of customers, ~14,000 subscriptions, historical financial data, and ~200,000 legacy payment tokens with zero disruption. Customers also needed to maintain access without resetting passwords.

Complex Subscription and Billing Requirements: WEI's subscription model required plan changes, pauses, cancellations on expiry, immediate termination, extensions, and multiple subscription states. Failed payments required structured retries and notifications before cancellation.

Time-Sensitive Multi-Channel Tips: Expert tips needed to reach eligible subscribers through email, mobile push, browser notifications, Android, iOS, Betmatic, and ChampionBets with minimal delay.

Highly Customized Betting Rules: Each WEI tipping products had different betting formats, markets, validation rules, and API requirements that changed frequently, making hard-coded integrations difficult to maintain.

Complex Expert Payments: WEI's ~20 experts required monthly payouts covering platform charges, affiliate payments, split payments, GST, invoices, and historical financial data, while customer subscription and expert payout cycles could differ.

Promotional Complexity: WEI required discounts, trials, bonuses, free trials, giveaways, and combinations not supported by standard nopCommerce functionality.

A Dated, Sluggish User Experience: The legacy platform was outdated and slow, with separate sites and mobile layouts that often broke.

A Fragmented Purchase-to-Access Journey: Customers browsed and purchased on one public site, then had to move to a separate member portal to access their purchases.

Cluttered, Non-Responsive Account Layouts: The member portal used rigid desktop-only tables spanning 12+ fixed columns, mixing unpurchased products, promotions, and active memberships, with on-screen scroll arrows needed to find actions.

Our Solution

Unified nopCommerce Platform: nopStation replaced the two legacy websites with one nopCommerce ecosystem connecting customer management, subscriptions, payments, expert tips, reporting, and communications with native Android and iOS apps. A new Flutter/Dart mobile app replaced the legacy .NET MAUI app, allowing members to manage subscriptions and receive tips through the centralized platform. Dynamic landing pages and a marketing messaging system added flexibility for campaigns, promotional content, and customer communications.

Modernizing the Experience & Performance: The legacy sites were merged into a slick, fast, fully responsive portal. Pages, tables and tips load without delays or freezes on desktop and mobile.

Unifying the Disconnected Customer Journey: Browsing, checkouts and member account management were all brought together, so customers could browse services, buy them and immediately use subscriptions in one journey.

Eliminating Cluttered, Non-Responsive Layouts: The rigid tables were replaced with a clean, mobile-first design that separated the store catalog from active subscriptions. Renewal dates, payment types and account actions are organized and available to you on any screen without scrolling horizontally.

Large-Scale Data and Payment Migration: Migrating customer accounts, subscriptions, historic transactions and ~200,000 payment tokens. We transitioned from an old token method to a vault-based payment method to keep recurring charges via the transition. Customer passwords were migrated also avoiding forced reset.

Custom Subscription and Billing Engine: A dedicated engine handles plan changes, pauses, extensions, cancelations, termination, recurring billing, payment failures and automated retries. It notifies customers, attempts to recover and cancels subscriptions when the configured retry cycle is exhausted. Active cancelation, cancelation, and termination distinguished by detailed history.

High-Speed Tips Delivery: A centralized workflow handles tip creation, scheduling, validation, and distribution across email, mobile/browser notifications, Betmatic, and ChampionBets. Subscription and access rules are applied before delivery, with background tasks and batch processing supporting scheduled and high-volume workloads. Automatic link and content filtering ensures messages meet WEI requirements before they delivered to the clients.

Configurable Betmatic Integration: Previously, product configurations and business logic for WEI were hard-coded in the legacy system, making changes difficult and requiring developer intervention. nopStation has made this a flexible configurable integration. The platform enables product-specific configurations for betting codes, markets, units and message formatting and there is ample customization to meet the different requirements of WEI’s tipping services. Each product can have its own rules, so the business can handle changing betting requirements without having to change the underlying code again and again. The platform takes care of all the necessary validation and formatting in the backend before sending data to Betmatic and ChampionBets. This makes the experience easier for administrators and external API users and satisfies third-party payload and validation requirements.

Custom Promotion Management: nopCommerce promotions were broadened to encompass discounts, trials, bonuses, free trials, giveaways, and combinations of offers.

Expert Payments and Invoicing: A dedicated system calculates expert payouts, including platform charges, affiliate payments, split payments, GST, and differing subscription/payout cycles. Historical data was migrated, with reporting, invoice generation, and payment reconciliation built in.

Connected Third-Party Ecosystem: The platform integrates PayPal, eWAY, Keap, Mailgun, Firebase, Betmatic, and ChampionBets, connecting payments, CRM, communications, notifications, and betting services. Keap newsletter subscriber synchronization keeps marketing data aligned with the CRM.

Business Impact

WEI's previous setup created business risk through slow, disconnected sites, hard-coded logic, cluttered mobile experiences, and a fragmented purchase-to-access journey. In a daily, time-sensitive subscription business, these problems could lead to increased support costs, missed renewals and higher member churn.

The new platform eliminated that friction. One fast, mobile-first experience for better conversion and retention. Configurable subscription, promotional and Betmatic rules reduce reliance on development cycles for changes to plans, campaigns and products. Centralized expert payments, reporting, reconciliation and integrations reduced manual operational work. 3,000+ customers migrated with zero disruption, ~14,000 subscriptions and ~200,000 payment tokens secured recurring revenue and member trust.

Building More Than an eCommerce Platform

The WEI project went beyond a conventional nopCommerce implementation. nopStation migrated a business-critical subscription ecosystem while preserving customer access, recurring payment continuity, historical data, and daily tipping operations. By combining nopCommerce with custom subscription, billing, messaging, betting, financial, mobile, and integration capabilities, nopStation gave WEI a single platform built around its current operations and a stronger foundation for future growth.
