Background

A powerful desktop application was being used by an enterprise business organization, which was very crucial and facilitated smooth daily activities within three departments in the company. The system formed an essential part of business processes, and it has been serving the organization well for a number of years.

Nevertheless, due to the changes in operational requirements, the deficiencies of a desktop-exclusive one became more evident, especially concerning device accessibility, maintainability, and scalability. In response to these challenges and in accordance with the current trends of working with digital materials, the organization hosted a strategic initiative of converting the old desktop system to a fully responsive and web-based web application.

Significantly, it was not aimed at substituting a dysfunctional system, but on top of a healthy basis, i.e. to make it speedier, friendlier, and more capable of future evolution and adaptation.

Challenges

The enterprise found a number of serious constraints in its current internal management system to make operations modern and match its changes in business requirement:

The available system confined to desktop could not be used on tablets and mobile devices, hence limiting flexibility to users who desired non-local or on-the-go access.

It was a legacy application hence maintenance is complicated and expensive. It is these bug fixes, updates and feature enhancements which eat up great effort of the developers and take the service offline.

It was necessary to enhance the speed at which the system reacted particularly so with a large amount of data, because the past arrangement took longer to respond.

The system must be futuristic, in that it should allow a new feature, integration and modular addition as the business evolves.

This made it time-consuming to install the application (as it had to be done individually per user, on the computer) as well as trickier to maintain.

The frontend was developed using React Admin and Material UI, providing a modern, responsive, and intuitive interface. This enhanced transparency coupled with the ease of using complex data, so that users could ingrate and move around the system in a more effective way.

Responsive Design
Its web application was planned to be sufficiently compatible to be used in any type of device: desktop, tablet, and mobile. This is what facilitated remote working as well as a mobile connection to the system.

Advanced Data Interactions
The system introduced powerful data-handling including expandable rows to see additional details inside the tables, drag and drop columns, column visibility in row, displayed results in an advanced filter, instant search, large volumes of data management with infinite scrolling, and data export of individual columns to Excel or CSV to increase reporting quickly.

The new web application was supported by a powerful .NET Web API and was built with a modular architecture quality, which makes the system scalable, maintainable and ready for future changes or third-party integrations.
