A brief background on Campion Education

Campion Education has been providing schools, students and parents with books and stationery in all curriculum areas of all states and territories since 1958, and practice tests for NAPLAN since 2007. Overall the company's education platform were good but its online Bookshop was not up to scratch with the shopping habits of students and parents. The Bookshop rebranded to being a curriculum-centred eCommerce platform, in partnership with nopStation, and launched in June 2026.

Challenges

Campion Education presented us with a definite challenge: to create a new and modern e-commerce storefront for their online Bookshop on nopCommerce, which will be scalable and replace the old experience of purchasing online. Campion's products are directly related to Australian education, and this is a factor in almost every decision customers make when purchasing products from Campion. An extensive audit and R&D process was carried out by our team to identify key development challenges in this project.

Complex Curriculum-Based Textbook Discovery: Students and parents required to select the appropriate textbooks according to state, school year, curriculum, subject and edition. The most significant challenge in this project was the construction of the accurate catalog, reflecting the Australian education system.

Outdated Storefront Experience: The current bookstore's navigation was outdated and was not intuitive to the user, the products were not easy to find, and the design of the bookstore was not consistent with the rest of Campion.

Integrating Existing Student Ordering Accounts: The new Bookshop would have to be able to integrate existing S.O.A's, so that the user doesn't have to create a duplicate account to access the new bookshop.

Checkout Friction: The multi-step checkout added unnecessary friction to the checkout process, and Campion wanted a faster, simpler checkout experience.

Accurate Australia-Wide Address Validation: Australia-Wide accurate address validation was needed to minimise bounced emails and accurate shipping of Australia-wide mail.

Manual Warehouse and Fulfillment Effort: Integration with the warehouse systems was required to automate fulfillment processes, reducing manual workload and ensuring accurate inventory management.

Seasonal Back-to-School Scalability: The solution needed to handle high seasonal traffic and thousands of curriculum-specific products without compromising performance.

Basic Transactional Emails: Existing emails were not branded and were not very engaging to customers. Campion wanted professional, branded communications instead.

Our Solution

After the audit and R&D stage, our team developed the new Bookshop based on nopCommerce 4.70 running on .NET 8 (ASP.NET Core), with a Razor MVC and Bootstrap frontend, SQL Server database, and hosting on Microsoft Azure. We used the NopGadget theme with the following nopStation plugins: Smart Mega Menu, Slider, Carousel, Deal Carousel, Product Ribbon, Announcement, Blogs and News, Abandoned Cart, Advance Cart, One Page Checkout and Address Validator (Experian), plus some custom development where required.

Curriculum Mapping Engine with High-Performance Filtering: A custom product structure was developed for mapping the curriculum, in order to structure the catalogue by Australian states, year level, subject, curriculum framework and edition: this structure is known as the Curriculum Mapping Engine with High-Performance Filtering. We also created the catalog structure and filtering process to enable students to quickly choose the appropriate textbook from thousands of products, which they can filter by year level, state, price and publisher. All parents have to know is their child's school to know their child's prescribed edition.

A Modern Responsive Storefront: The storefront was redesigned within the NopGadget theme to enhance the information architecture, responsiveness and navigation around the four focus areas of Campion: Textbooks, Study Guides, NAPLAN and Stationery. Thanks to the following plugins, Campion's team can place banners and promotions and manage those banners and promotions, as well as seasonal campaigns, on the website without the developer touching a single line of code. Smart Mega Menu, Slider, Carousel, Deal Carousel, Product Ribbon, Announcement.

Student Ordering Integration with OTP Authentication: We used a customized authentication flow to integrate the Bookshop into the Campion's Student Ordering platform. There is no duplicate registration, students log in with their current account and a one-time code will be sent via email to verify the student. This keeps Campion's existing system as the single source of student identity data.

One Page Checkout: Multiple pages checkout has been replaced with our nopStation One Page Checkout plugin, so all shipping info, delivery method and payment will be entered on one page. The Abandoned Cart plugin gives Campion the ability to follow up on abandoned carts, and the Advance Cart plugin provides a slide-out cart panel to allow customers to view and modify abandoned carts without having to leave the page they are on.

Experian Address Validation: We integrated nopStation's Address Validator plugin with the address validation service of Experian Australia. Addresses are automatically checked and standardized as customers are typing them at the checkout counter; this helps ensure the accurate delivery of addresses, both in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas across the country.

Warehouse and Fulfillment Automation with Azure Service Bus: We used an asynchronous integration between the Bookshop and the Campion's Warehouse operations with Azure Service Bus. Orders are processed automatically to the warehouse and inventory is updated automatically in the store and vice versa, reducing the manual work involved in the process and keeping the store's inventory up to date.

Built for Back-to-School Scale: Efficient filtering logic and optimized catalog architecture, in combination with Azure hosting, enable the platform to manage the surge of traffic during the back-to-school season. The combination of efficient filtering logic, optimized catalog architecture and Azure hosting make the platform suitable for the increased traffic of the back-to-school season. It will be an issue of configuration rather than redevelopment during peak season, since the infrastructure has been planned accordingly.

Branded Transactional Emails: We customized all order confirmation, invoice and other email templates to fit the Campion brand and added CTA buttons such as Start Shopping, Contact Us, Call Us and Review Your Order as well as social media call to action links.

The new Bookshop runs on a modular nopCommerce foundation, and the roadmap already has a next phase: an upgrade to nopCommerce 4.90 and the introduction of Campion's B2B business on the same platform.
