Altronics: Reinventing 50 Years of Electronics Retail with a Custom nopCommerce Platform

A Brief Background on Altronics
Founded in 1976, Altronics has grown from a single Perth parts counter to one of Australia’s leading electronics wholesalers. The fully Australian-owned business employs 140+ people, offers 10,000+ products across electronics, public address, security and DIY categories, and operates five distribution centers and eleven "Build It Yourself" electronics centers nationwide. It also manufactures Redback-branded commercial PA equipment in Western Australia.
Altronics' online store had been running on a custom-built LAMP platform for a long time. As the business grew and moved to a Microsoft-aligned technology strategy, the legacy platform became increasingly difficult to maintain, with high developer dependency, low marketing self-service and risks of security upgrades. Altronics has partnered with nopStation to transition its commerce ecosystem to a new platform. The move leverages nopStation’s status as a nopCommerce Gold Solution Partner and its expertise in modernizing complex, high-SKU businesses.
Challenges
The legacy LAMP platform had served Altronics well in its time, but years of custom development had left the business boxed in by its own codebase.
Development bottlenecks for every change
Even simple template or functionality changes required a deep knowledge of the fundamental programming language, so every rollout, big or small, was dependent on the small group of developers who understood the code.
Marketing locked out of its own tools
The platform was so rigid that marketing couldn’t even set up analytics code or implement something as simple as an analytics ID without bringing in a programmer, slowing down campaigns and everyday site management.
No control over search
Search results couldn't be tuned or refined without custom development, limiting Altronics' ability to help customers find the right part among 10,000+ SKUs.
No UI-based roles or permissions
There was no way to manage user roles or access rules through an interface - any access control change meant a code change, which further concentrated control in the hands of a few developers.
Fragile external dependencies
Routine tasks like product feeds relied on additional external services and cron jobs running outside the core platform, adding operational risk and moving parts to maintain.
Security upgrades that threatened to break the site
Security audits regularly required version upgrades, but on the legacy stack those upgrades risked breaking site elements through deprecation — turning routine maintenance into a high-stakes exercise.
Restricted third-party collaboration
Bringing in outside specialists, such as SEO teams, to work on the platform was difficult given how tightly the codebase was held by internal developers.
A strategic mismatch
Altronics' broader technology direction was moving toward a C# core in line with the business's wider integration around Microsoft solutions — a direction the LAMP platform could never support.
Our Solution
Over a six-month engagement, nopStation migrated Altronics from its custom LAMP platform to nopCommerce, upgrading to version 4.9 and integrating more than 15 plugins, many heavily customized, to support its complex B2B/B2C commerce model on a modern, extensible platform.
ERP-integrated B2B/B2C platform
nopStation built a comprehensive B2B/B2C plugin that serves as Altronics' core business rules engine, connecting pricing, customer management and fulfilment directly with nopCommerce. Customers are classified by type, including B2B, B2C and student, with ERP-driven price levels determining group and special pricing. Rules also account for domestic versus international customers and multiple ERP term-code combinations. A custom middleware Web API synchronizes product, pricing, stock, customer and order data between the ERP and storefront, keeping business rules configurable rather than hardcoded. Live ERP stock availability is also displayed on product listing pages.
Multi-layered payment rules
nopStation extended nopCommerce's native payment restrictions to dynamically determine eligibility for NAB card payments, bank transfer, account payment and PayPal. Rules combine country, customer type, domestic/international status, ERP term codes, price and customer levels, shipping requirements and store-specific restrictions. As a result, payment options can differ based on each customer's profile, location and fulfilment context.
Dynamic shipping and store-aware fulfilment
The Dynamic Shipping plugin was heavily customized to calculate shipping per order based on shipping conditions, timing, rates, cart contents, customer and order requirements, PO Box restrictions, store location, product availability, pickup eligibility and payment method.
This connects with store-level inventory, where products are linked to specific stores and stock locations. The platform supports backorders, displaying a clear Back Order status to B2B customers when stock is unavailable, and allows pickup availability to be configured by store. ERP stock therefore flows through store availability, backorders, pickup and delivery.
Customized checkout experience
The standard nopCommerce checkout was adapted around Altronics' business rules. Checkout information is automatically saved without unnecessary page reloads, while payment methods, customer-specific pricing, shipping options and store or pickup fulfilment choices are determined dynamically. This provides a unified checkout experience for both B2B and B2C customers.

Custom ERP integration layer
Because the ERP is Altronics' central source of truth, nopStation created a dedicated middleware Web API layer connecting ERP and nopCommerce. Product, customer, pricing, stock and order data flows through this controlled integration layer, avoiding tight coupling to the ERP's internal implementation and providing a foundation for future integrations.
Algolia-powered search and discovery
nopStation implemented and heavily customized Algolia Search with category, vendor, manufacture and specification filters; sorting by name, SKU, price and creation date; price-range and rating filters; and live product counts, giving Altronics greater control over catalog discovery.
Store Locator and location-based commerce
The Store Locator was extended beyond a map to support commerce and fulfilment. Admins can manage store images, locations, business hours and public holidays, alongside SEO-friendly store names and slugs. Each store can also have its own product and pickup availability, shipping rules, and payment restrictions.

Marketing self-service and configurable storefront
Widget Push, Survey, Product Badge, Mega Menu and Google Analytics plugins give Altronics' marketing team greater control without developer dependency. Admins can manage configurable storefront widgets, business and regular customer survey templates, promotional product badges and image-enabled catalogue navigation. Google Analytics was also extended with business-specific tracking and configuration.

Reliable feeds and SEO continuity
Feed Manager and Redirect Manager bring product feeds and URL redirects into the platform. Multiple feed templates, including Google formats, can be generated and managed from the admin, replacing legacy external services and cron jobs. SEO partners can also manage redirects directly.
Automated ERP data scheduling
An ERP Data Scheduler performs an overnight full catalogue synchronization and triggers partial stock updates after purchases, keeping inventory accurate across Altronics' five warehouses without manual intervention.
Secure payment integrations
The NAB Gateway connects directly with National Australia Bank for secure checkout. The payment layer also supports bank transfer, account payment and PayPal, with the multi-layered customer, country, shipping and store-level restrictions applied dynamically.
